The other day while browsing LinkedIn I came across an alumnus that works at the same bank that I do, which is surprising since a) my bank is small and b) the percentage of people on the street from BU is even smaller. He's much older than me -- graduated in 1983, but it was funny to learn that he also studied math!
After BU he entered the PhD program at Northwestern where, after watching this kid from China come into his graduate program and solve a 90 year old previously unsolvable problem, he realized he wasn't cut out for academia. I feel the same way about my math skills... except I didn't even excel as an undergraduate. *sigh* He must've done so well just to get into a PhD program, let alone Northwestern. It's really surprising because he talks at ease about theorems, proofs, etc despite being out of academia for so long. Perhaps he shouldn't have left academia..
Anyways it was cool meeting an alumnus at work. Often times I see other colleagues instantly connecting with someone just because they went to the same school; it was nice getting to experience that today. Plus we're both math people (though obviously him more than me) so that was very cool. For someone of his caliber though, I'm surprised he's not a quant.
